About this Project

The Atascadero Highway 41 Multi-Purpose Class I Path is approximately 2,700-feet long, extending from Portola Road to San Gabriel Road, and located between Atascadero Creek and Highway 41 west. The Atascadero Highway 41 Multi-Purpose Class I Path objective was to imporve an existing decomposed granite path to an 8-foot-wide paved multi-modal path while using design parameters to meet non-regulated projects under the post-construction stormwater requirements. The path design required a balance of constraints. These considerations included the clear recovery zone of Highway 41, zero net fill within the Atascadero Creek’s regulatory floodway, Caltrans horizontal design criteria, and maintaining sheet flow drainage patterns and preservation of existing trees to the greatest extent feasible were all navigated to generate a final project design agreeable to both the City of Atascadero and Caltrans District 5. The Class I Path construction funds were awarded by the California Transportation Commission in June of 2014. Construction began in the first quarter of 2015 and completed in 2016.
